Our Spas

Al Shifa Ayurvedic & Natural Treatment Spa opened it’s doors in 1992 in Ajman, UAE and soon gained a reputation as UAE’s premier Ayurvedic Spa. The Spa was started under the supervision of veteran Traditional Ayurvedic Physician Dr.K.P.Hassan Koya Gurukkal. He is an expert in the field of Kalari - the famous martial art of Kerala. We have got special herbal medicines and bandages under the Kalari stream for sprains, fractures and dislocations. This is another uniqueness of Al Shifa. Dr. Dinesh Kartha.C.V, an expert in Natural Medicine, Acupuncture and Yoga, is assisting him in treatments and overall administration.

Al Shifa Medical Massage Spa- our branch in Dubai was started in 1999. In a short span it has captured the attention of Health freeks. Presently we have tie-ups with various hotels for providing massage services to their guests. Also we are offering various types of massages from different countries in our spa in Dubai. We are really proud to say that we have been successful in bringing different nationality massages under one roof. The center is run under the the guidance of Dr. Suneer. K.P. He is the son of Dr. Hassan Koya Gurukkal and has got all the legacy of his expert father. Dr. Sivaprasad who belong to the family of Kottaram Vaidyas (Royal Ayurvedic Physicians) is assisting him there.

Kottakkal Ayurvedic Center-the latest addition to Al Shifa group of Spas was opened in 2003 in Ajman. This center is a puritarian Ayurvedic center concentrating on originality of treatments and herbal medicines. Dr. Subhash an expert in general practice of Ayurveda is the consultant there.

We have a panel of Doctors who are experts in the field of Ayurveda and other alternative therapies. Each of the Spa is having a Doctor and a traditional Ayurvedic Physician (Vaidya). They do consult each other before arriving at the apt treatment for the guest. Also every week Doctors and Vaidyas from all the Spas do meet to discuss and review the efficacy of treatments.

We make sure that those with at least 6 years experience in some major Ayurvedic center is only recruited to our Spas. Any tumor is associated with an abnormal growth of cells in the body, causing severe problems with the utilization of the bodily resources. Tumors go on expanding without proper explanation for their growth; and they can lead to death in most cases. Definition of Fantum tumors (Gulma Roga) Gulma roga is a condition in which any mass of cells is formed within the abdomen. The mass is usually a hard mass and may be benign or malignant. Hence all tumors formed in the abdomen, known as fantum tumors, need not be cancerous. In actuality, though the name ‘tumor’ is used while describing gulma roga, the condition may be just an aggregation of cells resembling a tumor. All tumors and tumor-like growths in the body are caused due to a conflict between the vata and the kapha doshas in the human body. Vata dosha is responsible for the cell division, i.e. the multiplication of cells in the body, while kapha dosha is responsible for the growth of cells.


Hence when a person has vitiations of both the vata and the kapha dosha, there is a high degree of risk that a tumor may occur in the body. The condition of gulma in Ayurveda is held in close connection with two other conditions – granthi and arbuda. Granthi is the condition in which a lump or tumor occurs on the body which can be seen from the outside. After a while, this lump might rupture, causing an ulcer, which has been termed as vrana in Ayurveda . Arbuda is the name given to the direct malignant form of cancer. Out of all the three conditions – gulma, granthi and arbuda – gulma is the least serious.


Causes and Types of Fantum tumors (Gulma roga)

In Ayurveda , gulmaroga is thought to be caused due to eight different reasons. Hence it can be said that there are eight types of gulma. The following are the eight types of gulma and their respective causes:-

(1) Vataja Gulma – This is caused due to imbalance of the vata dosha.

(2) Pittaja Gulma – This is caused due to imbalance of the pitta dosha.

(3) Kaphaja Gulma – This is caused due to imbalance of the kapha dosha.

(4) Vataja-Pittaja Gulma – This is caused due to imbalance of both the vata and the pitta doshas.

(5) Pittaja-Kaphaja Gulma – This is caused due to imbalance of both the pitta and the kapha doshas.

(6) Vataja-Kaphaja Gulma – This is caused due to imbalance of both the vata and the kapha doshas.

(7) Tridosha Gulma – This is caused due to imbalance of all the three doshas.

(8) Raktaja Gulma – This is caused due to imbalance of the artava dhaatu in women.


All the gulmas mentioned above are serious conditions requiring medications.


Symptoms of Fantum tumors (Gulma roga)


Depending on the different types of gulma roga that are present, there are different kinds of symptoms. The following table enlists the symptoms of the eight different kinds of gulma. Type of Gulma Location of the Tumor Symptoms Vataja Gulma Tumors are generally located in the large intestine or in the lower abdomen, i.e. in the pelvic region. Pain is observed in the neck and the head. The pain is of a throbbing or cutting type. Enlargement of the spleen, i.e. pleehodara, takes place. Fevers are common, with chills. Digestive problems such as churning sensations in the intestine occur along with chronic constipation, i.e. anaha. There is unexplained loss of weight. Hyper-pigmentation occurs, i.e. there is darkening of the skin. Nails and eyes can also darken. The person can feel movements of the tumor, as well as changes in its shape and size within the abdomen. Pittaja Gulma Tumors are generally located in the small intestine or in the solar plexus. Pain is felt at the location of the tumor. The pain is a searing or burning type of pain.


There are characteristic fevers. There are many problems with digestion as pitta is responsible for the digestive fire. Dyspepsia, i.e. amalapitta and diarrhea can occur. Skin undergoes paling of appearance and turns yellow. The nail and eyes also become yellow and can look jaundiced.


Kaphaja Gulma Tumors are generally located in the chest or in the stomach. The most remarkable symptom of this type of gulma is that the person loses his/her appetite. Instead there is nausea and vomiting. Fevers are very common, accompanied by chills. The tumor appears to be a hard and inflexible knot-like mass.


Vataja-Pittaja Gulma These tumors show combined symptoms of the vata and the pitta doshas. Pittaja-Kaphaja Gulma These tumors show combined symptoms of the pitta and the kapha doshas. Vataja-Kaphaja Gulma These tumors show combined symptoms of the vata and the kapha doshas. Tridosha Gulma These tumors show combined symptoms of all the three doshas. Raktaja Gulma These are tumor-like cysts andfibroids that occur in the ovaries and the uteruses in women. In raktaja gulma, which is found only in women, there is the formation of a tumor-like mass instead of an embryo.


 People who are at Risk of Fantum tumors (Gulma roga)


As already mentioned above, the combination of vata and kaphadoshas in people are very lethal for the formation of any type of tumors. Hence, people with the dual dosha or vata-kapha are very vulnerable to gulma roga if they do not take the adequate precautions.


Diet for People with Fantum tumors (Gulma roga)

Since tumors can be caused due to imbalances in all the three doshas, it is necessary to take a proper diet so as not to vitiate any of the doshas further. The common dietary guidelines are beneficial:-


Spicy and oily foods must be avoided. Castor oil is one among the few oils that can be safelytaken, and it is even helpful to the condition of gulma roga. Foods that are too hot or too cold must be avoided, as both can vitiate the vata dosha. Foods must not have an excess of any of the tastes. The well-balanced food is that which contains a fair proportion of all the tastes along with the nutrient constituents. Red meats must be totally avoided. Instead white meats like chicken and fish can be had. All kinds of food that can cause constipation must be avoided. This can play havoc with the balance of the pitta dosha in the body. It is not advisable to have any dish that is too dry. All dishes must have a fair amount of liquids in it, i.e. they must contain some ghee, avy or such component. Among fruits, pomegranates, mangoes and dry grapes are beneficial. Lentils must be avoided as they can cause gas and hence bring pressure on to the abdomen. Too many carbohydrates are not good for peoplewith fantum tumors. Hence one must avoid too much of a rice diet and carbohydrate-containing vegetables such as potatoes.


 Ayurvedic Treatment of Fantum tumors (Gulma roga)


Gulma roga has several herbs and medications that are prescribed for the treatment. Since there are several types of gulma, there are also correspondingly different types of herbs with different actions. The following is a list of some of the most popular herbs that are prescribed for gulma, along with their specific actions on the human body.


Adraka or Sunthi Zingiber officinalis GingerGinger is given to people with gulma roga. It is taken with four times the amount of sesame oil and twice the amount of jaggery in a mixture with milk. This concoction is known to reduce the symptoms of vataja gulma. This recipe is a very ancient medication, suggested by Chakradatta himself. Ashoka (chetti) Saraca indica Ashoka Ashoka is a very potent remedy for the treatment of raktaja gulma in women.


Bacha (Vayampu) Acorus calamus Calamus Calamus is prescribed for people with fantum tumors caused due to the vitiations of all the three doshas, i.e. for the tridosha gulma. Bijapura Citrus medica Citron The bijapura is very useful for the treatment of gulma, as itshigh vitamin C content helps in the allaying of the dosha imbalances that cause the gulma roga.


Heenga (Kayam) Ferula foetida Asafetida Along with bacha, heenga is also used for the treatment of tridosha gulma. Manjishtha Rubia cordifolia Indian Madder Manjishtha is used for the proper control of raktaja gulma. With the use of manjishtha, therecould be initially an increase in the bleeding, but with continued use, the bleeding will stop completely. Shvetajiraka or Jeera Cuminum cyminum Cumin The seeds of jeera are prescribed in the prevention of fantum tumors. The seeds are powdered and their dry powder is used for oral consumption. Yavani Hyoscyamus niger Henbane Henbane is a

nervine agent. At the same time it helps in relieving the pain and acts as a sedative. Therefore it is prescribed for people with fantum tumors.


The herbs mentioned above have been expertly mixed into preparations. These preparations contain just the right proportions of herbs so as not to produce major side effects. The following are some herbs that are effective in the treatment of fantum tumors:-

Sodium bicarbonate in the form of Gulmanaashaka called Tanaka


It must be borne in mind that while taking any Ayurvedic preparation, the doctor must be

consulted first. Most of the herbs do not have any side-effects (and are indeed a regular part of the diet), but some people may be allergic to certain herbs and may show adverse reactions.

Branches of Ayurveda

Ayurveda is a science of health and healthy living. It is a very scientifically designed pathy that is meant for relieving people from there misery. It is more than 5000 years old science but even then it had separate specialized branches according to the need of the patient. It is divided into eight parts. These are:-

» Kaya chikitsa (general medicine)
» Bal roga or kumar bhritya (pediatrics)
» Grah or bhoot vidya (psychotherapy)
» Shalakya tantra (eye, ear, nose and throat related science)
» Shalya (surgery)
» Agad tantra (toxicology)
» Rasayan (science of rejuvenation)
» Bajikaran (science of aphrodisiac)

Kaya chikitsa (General Medicine)

It is the main branch of ayurveda and deals with the general medicine. Kaya in literal terms means body. Hence it is related to the methods by which body is relived by miseries. But is the myth that it only deals with the physical body. It also helps in combating with the subtle body also. Hence it is more of a psycho-somatic way of treatment. When the tridosha (vata, pitta and kapha) of the body gets vitiated, it interferes with the sapt dhatus (seven tissues) of the body to disrupt the normal bodily function. Kaya chikitsa is s holistic way of curing a disease by reaching the root cause the problem and then rectifying it with the medicines and food supplements. Various methods have been devised to examine the patient so as the cause of his misery and ailments are detected.

Accordingly he is supplied with the remedy. There has been inclusion of various methods of performing treatments. One of the most common and the effective way of treating a disease is panchkarma. This is the series of five procedures or operations through which body is purified and cleansed from the vitiated dosha to achieve the state of homogenizes and happiness. In lay man term we can define panchkarma as the method by which there is the reversal of the pathway of the entry of the disease by detoxifying the body.

Charak samhita is the most appreciated book for practicing Kaya chikitsa. Charak samhita contains eight sthana which have a specific knowledge regarding subjects like anatomy, pathology medicine etc.

Bal Roga or Kumar Bhritya (Pediatrics)

This branch of ayurveda deals with the care and remedies related to children. It tells us every thing about parental care right from the birth of the child to the teens. Every aspect is covered in this subject regarding the stages of growth. Many methods have been discussed for improving the immunity and maintaing the proper growth of the child. All the sequence of the pattern and stages growth of the child to judge weather his growth is normal or not.

Kumar bhritya stare that the mental and physical condition of mother has a great impact on the health of the child. It also has recommended aahar (food) and vihar (life style) so as the mother could deliver healthy baby. It also deals with the treatment of various disorders like diarrhoea, constipation, fever, measles etc. other topic that are included in it are how to conceive, choosing gender of the child, improving intelligence of the child and midwifery. The major references of bal roga are found in kashyap samhita.

Grah or bhoot vidya or psychotherapy

It is another very important branch of ayurveda that deals with the mental disorders. In addition to the medicinal therapy to improve the condition, certain therapy like yoga and meditation are also included to cure a patient. This branch of ayurveda has some controversies attached to it as some of the experts believe that this branch deals with the supernatural forces that occupy the mind and the body. The other groups of experts believe it as a bacterial and viral infection in the body and give the explanation by defining the term bhoot that is synonyms to ghost , the invisible force that cause trouble to mankind. Bhoot vidya lays stress on the use of plants for disinfectant purposes so as to get rid of invisible bad forces (bacteria and virus) to infect the body and make the environment pure and disease free. These are mentioned under the name “graham vidya dravya”. Along with this other remedies like diet and various yoga procedures are also mentioned.

Shalakya Tantra (eye, ear, nose and throat related science)

It deals with the cause, diagnosis, prognosis, prevention and remedies related to eyes, ears, nose and throat disorders.. As mentioned by sushurut there are about seventy two disease that is related to eyes. The name also signifies Shalakya tantra as “shallaka” in Sanskrit means a probe and all the procedures and examination regarding ENT and ophthalmology disorders are done via help of probe. Sushurut samhita has given even minute details of the Shalakya tantra which are very similar to that of the modern day detailing. Even the structure of eyes is defined in such a way that it is more minutely detailed as the modem sciences. There has also been mentioning of surgeries like hinoplasty and auraplasty for cosmetic reasons. Various other methods regarding the general care of the eye and ENT structures has been mentioned in the text like charak samhita, sushurut samhita and ashtang samghrah.

Shalya tantra (General Surgery)

Ayurveda has mentioned surgery which is more advanced than that of the present era. Surgery belongs to the Dhanwantry School. Sushurut samhita is considered as the pioneer in giving procedures in surgeries. Sushurut the composer of sushurut samhita has very nice described every thing regarding surgery. It is a fact that for performing surgeries we must have a greater knowledge of anatomy. If compare anatomy as mentioned in sushurut, you will find it more superior and more descriptive the modern day anatomy. Knowledge of muscle, bones and tendons and ligaments was very much known to the ancient ayurvedic physician and surgeons. Sushurut has mentioned complete and step by step details of various procedures that are related to the disorders like tumors, hemorrhages, injuries, fractures and deliveries. Good references of complicated procedures like intestinal obstructions and renal calculus have also been found. Cosmetic surgery was very advanced in that era. His surgery of trichiasis (eye related disorder) can be related to the techniques followed in modern day surgeries. Sushurut samhita also carries full description of the instruments used in performing surgeries. These instruments were made from stones, wood, metals and animal bones etc. a proper care like sterilization of those instruments were also taken into consideration. Usage of jaloka (leech) in skin related disorders and other ailments was also in use which modern science has now started practicing. Usage of kshar sutra (medicated thread) was used in excising the part which was to be operated which was the best technique to avoid any king of infection and recovery was very fast.

Agad tantra (toxicology)

It basically deals with the toxins. It mentions the way of getting rid of positioning in the body. There is mentioning of wide range of poisons which are either of animal or plant origin. There is also the mentioning of poisons derived from minerals like arsenic etc and artificial poisoning substances. Charak samhita, sushurut samhita and ashtang samghrah also mentions about the importance of Agad tantra in our lifestyle. It has also mentioned about the combination of the food stuffs that is to be avoided as they can become poison after coming in contact with each other. It also mentions about the antidotes of the poisons.

Rasayan (science of rejuvenation)

This branch of ayurveda deals with the promotion of longitivity and maintaining the health of the people. With the aid of rasayan we can increase the ojo (life force) of the body and also increase the immune system of an individual. In a lay man term rasayan can be said as the procedure or a substance by which aging process is retarded.This method of beating our age has been time tested and was very much in practice in ancient India. Rishi by practicing therapy was able to attain youth for very long time. When taken as the literal meaning of the term rasayan, it means enhancing the effect of rasa (a vital fluid responsible for creating energy in our body.). You can yourself think of the importance of rasayan as it is mentioned in first chapter of chikitsa sthana of charak samhita. There are several rasayan mentioned in ayurveda. Major one are: amlaki (Indian goose berry), shilajit, ashwagandha, bhringraj, triphala etc.There are two methods of application of rasayans. These are kutipraveshika rasayan and vatatpika rasayan.Kutipraveshika is a set up in which there is the construction of a structure where a person willing of having rasayan is kept for prescribed amount of time. In vatatpika there is consumption of various types of herbs that serves the purpose of rasayan.

Bajikaran (science of aphrodisiac)

This branch of ayurveda deals with the two application. One is to cover the infertility aspect and other is to cover the enhancement of sexual powers. Ayurveda has always stressed on producing a healthy progeny so as our society can develop. Hence to fulfill these criteria good qualities of sperms are to be produced. Bajikaran coves this aspect. It also helps in resolving the sexual related problems like infertility, impotence, decreased sperm count etc.
